ABBA and the Flight Deck, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Arts and Culture* (USDAC), are excited to announce the People’s State of the Union #PSOTU2017, a new civic ritual and participatory art project.
In Presidential inauguration years like 2017, there is no official State of the Union Address. But after this campaign cycle, WE THE PEOPLE are likely to have even more light than usual to shed on this nation’s recent past and immediate future. Now, more than ever, we need to strengthen our communities by listening deeply, building relationships, and reminding one another that every story matters.
From January 27-February 5, 2017, people across the country are invited to convene Story Circles with neighbors, friends, and community members to respond to three prompts:
- Share a story about something you have experienced that gave you insight into the cultural state of our union.
- Share a story about a time you felt a sense of belonging—or the opposite—to this nation.
- Share a story about a time you broke through a barrier to connect with someone different from yourself or with whom you disagreed.
Stories will be shared online via the Story Portal, inspiring the creation of the 2017 People's State of the Union Poetic Address, devised collaboratively by a diverse group of poets. The Poet Address to the Nation will be delivered as a poem, broadcast live on March 11, 2017.

If you cannot attend, feel free to host a Story Circle in your community! A Story Circle event can be 6-10 people in a living room, a larger gathering with multiple story circles in a theater, school, or community center —or anything in between. A free online facilitation training and a step-by-step toolkit make it easy to host.
